Chapter 5: Isabel

No one bothered Isabel when she entered her house. She went straight to her room and got online. Within seconds she was on her blogspot, a smile playing at her lips. Five hundred hits so far that day. When Isabel had started two months earlier, she'd been lucky to get five in a week. To her amazement, however, her hits had steadily increased until a week ago when they positively exploded. She added another post and then moved on to homework. At around seven-thirty, there had been no knock on Isabel's door. With a sigh, she walked to the kitchen, fixed herself a sandwich, and then returned to her room.
She padded...TO BE COMPLETED

Chapter 5: Kimber

Dear Diary,
Well...we don't know what else to call you, you inanimate object who can't even reply to whatever we say.
Anyways, we started school at Ember High a couple of days ago. Overall, it's a pretty big school...in a good way. We blend right into the background. We haven't really made any friends yet. We guess it's because we've secluded ourselves in a comfy corner of the library every day during lunch. Well, there is this one girl, Quin. She came over to talk to us today and seemed really nice-even after I humiliated ourselves by checking out a stupid bug encyclopedia and looked a full color picture of a giant caterpillar of doom. She fears the open ocean. I guess I could understand that...but then again, it's freedom! Skaene says the sky is freedom and I absolutely agree. Maybe he'll settle as a falcon...or a hawk. Too bad I myself can't fly. Back to school, math is really easy. They should hire teachers who actually know that sine of 90 is one. Well, we have homework to do. Oh joy.

-Kimber & SKAENE

Kimber sighed and closed the notebook. She reached over and grabbed the glass of juice from the night stand. She brought the glass to her lips, but wasn't able to enjoy the sweet tropical taste. They had checked out a book that didn't have a title. It had a pale, cream tint with deep red stripes across the spine. Out of curiosity, they brought it home. That book had just changed colors as it sat on the edge of Kimber's bed. It faded from a cream to a black. A strip of green and blue shot across the edges of the pages like a bolt of lightning. As soon as it began, it was gone. Th ebook returned to normal. Kimber dropped her glass. Skaene grabbed the book with his talons. Kimber let out a frustrated grumbled. Skaene plopped the book on her lap. Kimber got out of the bed and sat in her beanbag chair, opening the book as she did. It wouldn't open. She threw it in her backpack. It was going to go bye-bye the next day.
-Read it!
No. I have a bed to clean and homework to do. I don't want to go to sleep to mango punch goodness and have missing assignments.
-Read it!
NO!
-Why?
silence.
-Come on. It's an enigma. Why did it do that?
But, I can't open it.
-Try.
I did. Hoooomework.
-Fine. But, I don't think you should return it just yet.
Ugh.
-You should take time to examine it. We have no clue what we have here. The librarians probably don't even know about it. Maybe we could show it to Quin. She seems trustworthy enough.
But, it's just a book.
-"Just a book?" You never treat books as "just" books...except for the bug book.
Grumble. OK fine. We'll show it to Quin. I highly doubt she'll say much about it though.
-Yes! So, deal?
Deal.

Chapter 4: Quin

TO BE...TYPED UP. *COUGHJESSCOUGH*

Chapter 4: Isabel

Isabel's good will towards her daemon evaporated with the drops of water rolling down her skin.
"Why did you do it?" Isabel's voice was tight and she kept her gaze firmly on the river.
"I lost my patience," Olin said with a note of humility in his voice that surprised Isabel.
"Why?"
"Because you never look at me. I'm a part of you that you don't understand and refuse to try to understand. It gets tiresome," Olin explained patiently. "You're cold," he stated before Isabel could reply.
With a start, Isabel realized he was right. They lay on the banks of the river where they had plopped contently down after their swim. The rain had stopped, but the wind was cold against Isabel's wet skin.
Together they picked their way through the forest back to the house. They walked slowly this time, the tension between them eased temporarily. Much to Isabel's dismay, her anger had been replaced by yet more questions. Despite herself, Isabel's eyes wandered severl times to her daemon walking gracefully beside her.

Chapter 4: Kimber

Kimber grinned; knowing she wasn't the only one with an unusual fear calmed her a bit. Now the girl was talking about carnival rides.
"Uh...yeah! I know how you feel." she blabbered.
-Except not.
Tais-toi. Shut up.
She subconsciously placed her hand on Skaene. She attempted to start another subject. "Um...what classes do you have?"

Chapter 3: Quin

Quin looked around in alarm as the girl next to her gave a strangled sort of cry. The girl quickly threw a book back into the shelf. Noa looked positively alarmed.
Quin touched her knee. "Are you okay, uh...um..."
Dang. What the heck was her name again?
"Kimber!" Quin caught herself quickly. "Yes, um..."
KImber looked down out of shyness or embarrassment; Quin couldn't tell.
"I have scoleciphobia," she muttered. "Fear of worms."
"Oh." Quin said it very good-naturally. "You know, I have a fear of deep water."
Kimber gazed at her in surprised, then turned her attentions to Noa.
"That's the tallest daemon I've ever seen," she said. Quin grinned as Noa looked sheepishly at the ground.
"I know, right? It's really a pain when you want to go on a carnival ride or something."

Chapter 3: Isabel

The moment Isabel's feet hit the muddy earth, she took off running. the bus had just dropped her off at home; but she didn't bother to go into her house. She ran straight past it to the acres of forest that was her back yard. The cool green of it welcomed her, but she didn't slow to enjoy it. It was raining and had been all day, and mud clung to her feet with every step. So when she reached the river several minutes later, her shoes and her pants up to her knee were caked with mud.
Isabel didn't hesitate. She stripped down to her bathing suit which she had worn under her clothing everyday since she was three. Then, without a word to her daemon, whom she still had not spoken to since the incident at lunch that day, Isabel dove into the river.
Instantly, everything changed. The icy water jolted Isabel into the present. The current flowed tirelessly around her, washing away the mud and grime of Isabel's day and carrying it downstream.
With equally powerful stroked, Isabel and Olin swam to the place where the river deepened, and the current slowed to a gentle push now and again.
As one, girl and daemon slipped seamlessly beneath the surface. They plunged deeper and deeper, drinking in the perfect silence. Then they turned and rain drops play on the surface of the water.
-Race you.
Isabel grinned in reply and shot off after her daemon who had not waited for an answer. With each fierce, grateful stroke, Isabel grew closer to her daemon. But, as always, he won.
